untitled, marks on asphalt by mgilpin untitled, marks on asphalt by mgilpin
i struggled with where to put this: gallery or scraps... i decided to toss it here, because few people look at scraps...

i also wasn't sure what to call it... 'urban & rural'?... 'abstract & surreal'... i chose 'conceptual' because my interest was in the marks... and by extension, mark-making... and as an enduring human interest/action... and, in this case, a specific instance...

the marks here are created as they are for utility and from the limitations and opportunities inherent in the mark-making tool... which makes me wonder about how that may apply to other expressions... and their marks...

I like this, the black on the road is utterly expressive, like its superimposed into the real world. lush lush.

that is exactly how i felt when i saw it... i just wish i had been able to shoot the marks from directly above... so that the entire 'squiggle' would be equally weighted... with none given the focus of perspective...

Give the guy a cigarette! God damn!

Great image as I agree, the mark making is definetely special.

You can! It is so cathartic, at least it is for me.
Give it a shot. You will most likely be surprised by the outcome.

i have tried... i get so 'tight'... and that shows... it looks forced...

what i need to do is take a drawing class... again... (i've had exactly one)... that structure and environment made it easier for me last time...

I had so much fun once, that I go completely carried away and actually tore a hole in the canvas. And that pissed me off. What a waste. Oh well :)

It was. I was really into it, as it was a piece pertaining to Aushcwitz, and I rarely do pre concieved art, and it was going quite nicely until the butter knife I was using to scrape ink off the canvas (mark making of a sort) partially went through because the canvas was too wet.

It made me a little emotional as whilst I am not a perfectionist, I do like to present work in a professional manner, and whilst the tear is only minor (a gauge more like) it now resides on my wall - I can't show it without having some weird anxiety attached to it.

(grin)... i know that feeling... the smallest imperfection keeps things in boxes at my house... i've had friends say 'you can barely see it' and 'if you don't want, then give it to me'... but they stay in boxes...

a piece about aushcwitz?... hhhhmmm... that could be hard... but, if it worked out, really impressive... that is a powerful (and difficult) subject... did you ever paint another?...

Reminds me of something, but not shure what, but excellent picture. Something with the accidental pattern that doesnt look accidental at all.

btw, excellent quote too - enjoyed that film :-)

i love that film... it didn't do well at the box-office... or critically... but i really love it...

and the quote is fun... especially considering that most people when asked say that they take pictures to 'preserve memories'... (not artists, necessarily, but the general public)... which is odd, because i'd argue that the image and the memory are fundamentally different... the image is so exact... and unyielding... while memory is such a creative thing... and constantly evolving...

(nodding)... it does have a purposeful look, doesn't it... i loved that about it...

no, bit strange that that film didnīt hit, it sort of had all the ingredients, but suppose it had a sort of underlying intelligense :-) wich put the masses off..

..but then one talks about photographic memory too...

a vocie says something about that mythical bird ... phoenix (the picture)

i like that analogy... memory and/or the image as a phoenix... quite appropriate... and lovely...

(nodding)... some movies are too smart for commercial success... it is a shame... but most audiences don't want to think... or be challenged...

i still don't know most days...

i'm going to give you a piece of advice... if i may... don't spend all your time trying to make the one, right choice... go with what sounds good at the time... and finish what you start... you can always go back to school later and try something different...

that is my one 'big-brother/father' moment for the week...

that is really good advice.
I think I have this mind set of I have to know exactly what I want to do and do it and do that forever...
so thanks
that helps....a lot.

i don't make a lot of 'fun' art... and i think this one is... i'm glad you enjoyed the lines...

(chuckle)... i would call it conceptual... if the marks had been mine... as it is... i'm just happy with the result... in any category...

lmyao?... (grin)... thanks...

do you know the self-portrait by chuck close featuring his thumb print?... he took a large polaroid of himself... then appled a fine grid to it... next, he made a large canvas with the same number of grid squares... finally, he transposed the photo to the canvas using varying shades of gray ink and his thumb, filling each square with an appropriate shade of gray to create the final image...
